Welcome to St Margaret’s Allotments
St Margaret’s Allotments can claim to be one of the most beautiful allotments in the country. Together with the immediately adjacent St Margaret’s Churchyard, the two sites are a jewel in Durham’s emerald network. The views of the Cathedral are glorious, and no timepiece is needed with the Cathedral bells keeping time as plots are worked on or used for relaxation and enjoyment.
The allotments
We have 113 plots which are looked after by over 160 plotholders. We produce fruit, vegetables and flowers in a beautiful environment. We hold regular public events as well as socials, lectures and other special events for members.
Rich in wildlife
The allotments and the churchyard are an open site for everyone to enjoy, with no locked gates, and many people walk through, either to take the scenic route to and from Durham City or just to look about. The sites are rich in wildlife, with many familiar garden birds, some less familiar, and also a healthy population of butterflies and other insects, and frogs.

St Margaret’s churchyard
The allotments site is owned by the Diocesan Board of Durham and rented by an agreement with St Margaret’s Allotments Association, which runs the allotments with the participation of all plot-holders. The churchyard is the responsibility of the Parochial Church Council and is tended by the Friends of St Margaret’s Churchyard.
